A while ago, Zipppy the newbie tech came over to my house, and we worked on my cars power steering system. We were hoping to change all the hoses and the fluid. This is because my car was making a groan when it turns.
Unfortunately we didn't really know what we were doing, and Zipppy had to be home at 5 so we weren't able to get the old hoses off. However we were able to drain about 90-95% of the power steering fluid and put in new fluid.
I think my fluid needed changing desperately...it was dirty as all hell, and no longer red.
Also in an attempt to drain the reservoir using the suction method led to me getting a mouth full of power steering fluid.
PSA: Old power steering fluid does not taste very good.
Anyways...my car has stopped groaning when it turns. I think it likes the new fluid.

keep an eye for any dripping under the car and listen for any new noise. The power steering seals are some of the first to go under abuse.
Also, avoid holding the wheel at full lock, because that can cause big problems.

Mustang mis-shifted from 1st to 3rd, but still cool.
I've had cars that had a constant whine from the power steering pump, I've also had cars that only whined when you turned the wheel(944). The 944 pump was pretty damn easy to replace all the seals. I was super surprised how easy after watching a video. I'm somewhat old - 43 and I'm still amazed by the amount of information that is available today, compared to 20+ years ago when the only thing I knew about cars was taught to me by my dad, and I wasn't a very good listener haha.
